England: 5 Players Who Should Replace 100 Game Ashley Cole

3. Kieran Gibbs

Kieran Gibbs Originally starting out within Wimbledon€™s academy Gibbs switched to Arsenal in 2004 when Wimbledon disbanded and became MK Dons. He played regularly for Arsenal€™s U18 side in both the left wing and midfield positions before finally signing a professional contract with the club in September 2007. Finding his route to the first team blocked by the form of first-choice left-back Gaël Clichy, Gibbs made only 2 League Cup appearances for Arsenal and subsequently joined Norwich City on loan for the remainder of the 2007/08 season. During this time Gibbs also established himself as a key member of the England U19 set-up, making 9 appearances. Following his return to Arsenal during the 2008/09 season Gibbs was still considered second-choice to Clichy but managed to make several sporadic appearances, most notably in the Champions League, featuring in the group stages, quarter-final and semi final. Missing much of the following season with a broken metatarsal Gibbs resumed his place as deputy to Clichy until July 2011 when Clichy signed for big spenders Manchester City and Arsene Wenger confirmed Gibbs would replace Clichy as first-choice left-back. Having made 15 England U21 appearances and over 100 senior appearances Gibbs received a call-up to the senior squad and has earned 2 England caps to date. It has to be said that at the age of 23 Gibbs certainly has the experience to make it on the international stage.
