England's Best Ever Ashes Players

anderson With The Ashes 2013 in full swing and England currently 2-0 up in the series as it heads to Old Trafford, it's time to look back on some of England's greatest ever players and the roles they have played in the Ashes! Officially starting in 1882/83, the Ashes is the world's most competitive and eagerly anticipated cricketing event, fought between England and Australia for the coveted Ashes urn. Australia have won 31 times, compared to England's 30, with 5 draws. With a series win in their sights England are hoping to make it their 31st win at Old Trafford in around a weeks time. With hundreds of great players across the years, it's been tough to pick out my top 10, but lets start here!

10. David Gower

With a batting average of 44.25 in 117 test matches, David 'Lord' Gower certainly had a very successful England career. He is regarded by many experts as England's greatest ever left-handed batsman due to his reliability, alongside his graceful and fluent batting style. Often accumulating runs at ease, he was very easy to watch and rarely gave fans a scare! As a captain he had total control of his players and commanded their utmost respect. This winning combination came to a head in 1985 when he led England to an Ashes series victory with convincing performances. A wonderful batsman and a joy to watch, Gower easily makes the top 10!
