9. Les Ames
Born in 1905, Les Ames is considered by many to be the "greatest wicket-keeper batsman the game has so far produced". An old school cricketer, Ames played 47 tests for England spanning a 10 year test career. Despite being highly injury prone, Ames averaged 40.56, notching up 8 centuries for England. These figures were highly impressive for the time, when wicket-keepers put less emphasis on batting. Despite a relatively short career, Ames had a great impact on the game and was highly influential in numerous Ashes series.
