Everton Sign Chelsea's Christian Atsu On Season-long Loan

Ghana midfielder becomes a Toffee.

Ghanaian midfielder Christian Atsu today became the thirteenth player to leave Stamford Bridge on loan after signing for a year with Everton. The 22-year old previously enjoyed a productive spell at Chelsea's Dutch feeder club, Vitesse Arnhem, before impressing with confident displays in his nation's three games at the World Cup. Atsu arrived at Chelsea from Porto in September 2013 for £3.5m, moving to Arnhem soon after signing a five year contract. Whilst his nickname, 'The African Messi', may be overstating his abilities a tad, he's a versatile attacking midfielder as comfortable playing centrally as on either wing. He was one of few players to come out of Vitesse's dismal post-Christmas form last season with any credit, managing a creditable five goals and six assists in thirty appearances. He's a capable passer, very quick on the ground and has a good work ethic, although his decision making and work off the ball could do with some refinement. He's likely to play on the left wing for Everton, often seen as his most natural position despite him playing in the centre for much of his time at Vitesse. Having proven himself in the Portuguese and Dutch leagues, he certainly has all the ability to rise to the challenge of the Premier League, although may require a bedding in period to adapt to the higher level of opposition. Either way, manager Roberto Martinez will no doubt be thrilled at the prospect of a front three of Atsu, Kevin Mirallas and Romelu Lukaku, a combination which could prove devastating for rapid counter-attacks. With Chelsea having a surfeit of options in the attacking midfield positions, this is a good move for the Ghanaian and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him make the move permanent, in much the same way as happened with Lukaku, if he impresses. Atsu is Everton's fourth signing of the summer following the club record £28m acquisition of Lukaku, also from Chelsea, plus Muhamed Besic from Hungarian side Ferencvaros and Gareth Barry on a free from Manchester City.
