Every UEFA Champions League Final Ranked From Worst To Best
10. Chelsea 1-1 Bayern Munich (2012)
Despite being owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, there was a David versus Goliath feel to Chelsea’s penalty shootout victory over Bayern Munich.
Much of that was down to the fact the Blues had so much seemingly stacked against them with the final played at Bayern’s home ground, the Allianz Arena in Munich, and Chelsea without several key first team players.
The final itself played out in a similar fashion too, with wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben creating a glut of chances for the wasteful Bavarians.
It was one-way traffic and when Bayern finally did break the deadlock, on the 83rd minute through Thomas Muller, it felt like that would be the end of it. But despite showing little in the way of attacking intent prior to the Müller goal, Chelsea rallied out of nowhere to score through a Didier Drogba header with two minutes to go.
By the time Petr Čech saved a Robben penalty in extra time, there was a growing sense that Chelsea were destined for glory – but Roberto Di Matteo’s team continued to make hard work of it.
When Juan Mata missed the Blues’ first spot-kick in the decisive penalty shootout, fans must have feared the worst. Yet Čech rescued Chelsea again, saving from Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger before Drogba sealed a first ever European Cup for the Blues.
It may not have been vintage Chelsea but it was vintage Champions League.
