When it comes to Fantasy Premier League, defence is easily the most overlooked section of most squads. The flashier players are found further up the pitch and many fantasy managers naturally prefer to spend most of their budget on midfielders and forwards who can provide plenty of goals and assists over the course of a season.

That makes sense, but a good defence can make or break your fantasy squad, so it's vital not to overlook this area. A quick look at last season's statistics shows us that César Azpilicueta, valued at just £6.5 million heading into the new season, amassed more fantasy points than his Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard, as well as outperforming Manchester City stars David Silva and Sergio Agüero and plenty of other top class players.

This shows that defenders can earn a lot of fantasy points, especially those who are capable of scoring and creating goals on a semi-regular basis, or those who play in defensive squads and get plenty of clean sheets. With that in mind, these ten defenders could help to get your fantasy season off to the perfect start.

10. Ben Mee (Burnley)

Burnley were one of the biggest surprises of last season, ending the year in 7th place and qualifying for the Europa League in the process. They may have finished the season quite a number of points behind the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, but their defence was almost just as good. Burnley only let in 39 goals all season. For reference, Liverpool and Chelsea let in 38.

With 12 clean sheets in total, Burnley's defenders proved to be very smart picks in the fantasy game and the team can be expected to be a tough nut to crack once again this season. Including a Burnley defender in your fantasy squad is definitely a smart move, especially in the early stages as Sean Dyche's side have one of the easier sets of fixtures in the first few weeks, playing Southampton, Watford, and Fulham to open the season.

He didn't score or create any goals last season, despite having quite a few shots and headers on goal, but £5m man Ben Mee is a good pick, having picked up 90 points last season. Injuries notwithstanding, the 28-year-old will be an ever-present in his side and should earn plenty of points for clean sheets, as well as having the possibility of chipping in with a goal or two.
