Formula 1 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Sebastian Vettel Dominates In Desert

The Small Picture

This weekend it goes to Giedo Van der Garde, Caterham's Dutch star. After a successful career working his way up to Formula 1, he was recruited to the McLaren young drivers programme and then worked with Super Aguri, Spyker (now Force India) and almost raced for Virgin (now Marussia) in 2011. In 2012 he became a reserve driver for Caterham, and this year stepped up to the big time with a race seat. After a fairly typical start to the year, highlighted by a 15th place finish in the wet conditions in Malaysia, he's gradually improved. He got Caterham into Q2 for the first time in 2013 at Monaco, securing Caterham's highest ever qualifying position with fifteenth on the grid, and later secured a fourteenth place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Since the upgrades Caterham have brought in he's become increasingly confident and this weekend dominated the race at the back of the grid, including overtaking a Williams early on. Crucially the call was made to his teammate to let him past due to his performance and pace, which is quite a call and sets a certain tone within a team. Could it be the step up towards a bright future for Van der Garde? Time will tell, but today was certainly a good show from him.
