Formula 1 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix – Webber Bows Out In Style

Qualifying

In a rain-disrupted session, Vettel seized another pole position at the final grand prix after a delayed Q3 finally got going. With over half a second on Rosberg in second, Red Bull underlined their dominance to the end. Webber looked strong through qualifying but only managed fourth in the end, struggling for grip as he found it very tricky and didn't feel he was that fast. Mercedes got onto the front row with Rosberg as they worked to beat the Ferrari's and build on a strong practice, though he was surprised the gap was so big to Vettel. Hamilton took fifth, disappointed after his teammate showed there was more potential in the car as he struggled with the wet conditions. He was focussed on beating Ferrari however to secure their second position in the constructors' championship. Alonso equalled his best qualifying position of 2013 with third on the grid with the car working better in the wet conditions, though he was disappointed as he ran wide through turn four and lost time that he said cost them second on the grid. For the race he said they would need a perfect strategy as things change so quickly. Home hero Felipe Massa, in his final qualifying for Ferrari, could only manage ninth and was understandably unhappy with his result, expecting something more but struggling with the conditions in sectors two and three. He looked forward to the race though and said they must be ready. Lotus were unable to match the results of recent races as Grosjean got sixth, going to the intermediates a little too early and encountering more water than others. He was still pleased with the pace of the car however ahead of the race. Kovalainen, after a good practice result, couldn't make the top ten and finished P11 as he failed to hook things up well enough. He blamed nobody but himself as the car was good and he hoped he could do better in the race. Torro Rosso built on good wet pace from qualifying to get both their cars into the top ten for the final race with Ricciardo seventh and Vergne eighth. Both drivers were very close as they enjoyed the wet performance of their car, with them targeting points to close out the season. Hulkenberg didn't manage the performance of recent qualifying, or his own pole position here in 2010 as he just got into the top ten with tenth position. Sauber were not as competitive as he had hoped and felt the car had turned around in terms of wet performance from early in the season. Gutierrez was a lowly P18 (P17 after penalties) after some good practice pace, missing out on the driest track time in Q1 with a mistake, after which the rain slowed everybody down. Paul di Resta led the way for Force India with P12, using a compromised setup that he felt would help should they get a dry race. He felt their wet performance had improved and hoped for results from the race. Sutil was P16 (P15 after penalties) lacked grip and confidence to push, pitting at Perez' accident late in Q2, hoping for the weather to shake up the race. William's looked more promising again with the wet conditions as Bottas got P13, though he felt the wet didn't suit their car and that the position reflected their pace as he targeted the top ten. Maldonado, in his final race for Williams, was P17 (P16 after penalties) as he struggled with rear tyre temperatures. McLaren had a woeful qualifying, with Perez P14 (P19 after penalties) as he failed to find the grip and then spun off through turn five after touching the kerbs, hitting the wall and damaging the car in a bid for a faster lap late in Q2. A gearbox change then gave him a five-place grid penalty, dropping him to P19, though he beat Jenson to make it 9-8 in his favour in their qualifying battle for the year. Button was right behind in P15 (P14 after penalties) and felt their abstaining from FP3 was the wrong call in hindsight. A low downforce setup didn't help them, as after P7 in Q1 with less water on the track he struggled with tyre temperatures and couldn't get to the top ten as the rain fell harder. Caterham dominated their rivals at the back of the grid with Pic P19 (P18 after penalties) and Van der Garde P20. Pic was pleased with the car in the rain, whilst Van der Garde was not so happy with the balance, but both drivers felt they had done their best to push for tenth in the constructors'. Marussia took P21 with Bianchi and P22 with Chilton, with the former making a big mistake at the end of his best flying lap that left him behind the Caterham's with more rain coming down. Chilton found it tricky struggled with some balance issues and couldn't challenge his teammate but felt race pace would be better.
