Formula 1 2013 United States Grand Prix - Sebastian Vettel Takes Unstoppable Eighth

Qualifying

Vettel seized pole position at the last moment after looking like he could lose out to Mark Webber again. Webber wasn't entirely happy with his run and had to settle for second. The second row of the grid was started with Grosjean in third for Lotus, pleased with his pace, and temporary replacement Kovalainen into the top ten with eighth place. Sauber found another great result with Hulkenberg as he stole fourth place in a car he was very comfortable with, while teammate Gutierrez also made the top ten with tenth place, though he couldn't string together a perfect lap and picked up a ten-place grid penalty for impeding Maldonado in Q1. Mercedes afternoon went to pieces on one side of the garage, with Lewis Hamilton taking fifth place after struggling to get the tyres to work, and Rosberg eliminated in Q2 and relegated to P14 (P12 after penalties) as he struggled to make the tyres work at all. Ferrari had an equally mixed time of things as Alonso managed to push up to sixth place, finding pace from a struggling car in changing conditions. Massa however only qualified P15 (P13 after penalties), struggling to find any grip in a fashion continued from practice, leaving him frustrated in their pursuit of second in the title race. McLaren found one in, one out for Q3 with Perez breaking in and then taking seventh place for the closest thing to his home race, while Jenson struggled with balance and grip and only came in P13 (P15 after penalties), perplexed by their sudden loss of pace for qualifying. Williams carried over their excellent pace into qualifying as Bottas smashed into the top ten and took ninth place, after taking the fastest time in Q1 and being strong in Q2, leaving Bottas actually slightly disappointed with his great result. Maldonado floundered, impeded by Gutierrez' Sauber and left down in P18 (P17 after penalties), prior to making some disparaging comments towards Williams as he suggested he had been sabotaged in favour of Bottas following his decision to leave the team. Torro Rosso were close to the top ten as Ricciardo bagged P11 (P10 after penalties), a strong starting position, as he struggled slightly with balance and the changing wind conditions, though he was generally pleased. Vergne couldn't explain how he only managed P16 (P14 after penalties), though he generally attributed it to tyre temperatures, and he was hopeful that long runs in the race could help get him up the order. Force India had a mixed result as Di Resta, generally happy, took P12 (P11 after penalties) with a spoiled final run in Q2 at a track he felt is not his best. Sutil ended up P17 (P16 after penalties) following his elimination in Q1 after a first run with traffic problems and a second ended by brake disc failure on his right front, taking him out of the session. Caterham didn't have things all their own way at the back as Van der Garde took P19 (P18 after penalties) with a car he was very happy with at a new track. Pic was P21 as he struggled with both understeer and oversteer, and will start from P22 after his five-place gearbox penalty. Bianchi got in between the Caterham's with P20 and was very happy following his issues over the weekend, still struggling with balance but very close to Van der Garde. Chilton was disappointed with P22 as he struggled with balance, made worse by changes the team made, and though he was happy with his lap he was unable to extract more time. On top of that, he impeded both Maldonado and Sutil during Q1 and received a drive-through penalty, which he had to serve in the first five laps of the race.
