Liverpool's goalkeeping troubles showed no sign of abating last season, with neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius able to hold down the number one jersey with any real confidence.

But Jurgen Klopp is nothing if not loyal, and the German has taken every opportunity to back his current duo whilst dismissing off-hand any speculation linking the club with a move for Joe Hart or Jordan Pickford.

If the Reds boss seriously sees Karius as his long-term number one, though, he really needs to consider bringing in a more steady backup option to take the reigns when errors begin to creep in.

The experienced Pepe Reina, who spent nearly a decade on Merseyside in the early part of his career, is heavily linked with a move to City, but an Anfield reunion could tempt him to reconsider his options.
