On a night where Ryan Giggs promised that the good times would once again return to Old Trafford, it was left to a fresh-faced namesake* to restore a portion of colour to the gloomy faces around the Theatre of Dreams. 18-year-old James Wilson was the name on everybody’s lips that night after his goal-poaching brace against Hull City.

Two years later, and his career hasn’t quite kicked on - indeed, it has stalled. He has added just one more Premier League goal to his haul, and was sent out on loan to promotion hopefuls Brighton last year and is at Derby now after the most recent transfer window. Hopefully he can do better there than he did at the former, where he might have hoped to have boasted a better record than five in 27 appearances.

You couldn’t blame the kid for worrying that he may have missed the boat - even if it is unfair to write him off before his 21st birthday. But it might be time to simply move on permanently rather than waiting around to find out.
