Signing a player off the back of a half-decent international tournament is always a dangerous ploy, and so it proved to be in the summer of 2014 for Manchester United. Marcos Rojo shot to fame two years ago when he excelled as the Argentine left-back during their credible run to the World Cup final where they narrowly lost out to Germany.

The-then 24-year-old looked confident and assured in possession, comfortable with both feet and was seamless when making the rare transitions into the centre of defence when needs dictated. And then, he signed for Manchester United.

The former Sporting Lisbon defender has been thoroughly underwhelming during the course of his two-year stint at the club, displaying none of the traits that made him stand out for Alejandro Sabella’s men.

Van Gaal claimed that Rojo's World Cup exploits left him feeling 'enchanted'. Considering the Argentine's calamitous showings did nothing to save his job, you'd wonder if his affections have waned slightly.

Rojo currently finds himself behind a plethora of options at left-back, with United currently being able to field Luke Shaw, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Matteo Darmian, Joe Riley, Daley Blind, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and of course, Ashley Young, if needs be.

Time's up, Marcos.
