Man Utd: Michael Carrick Gets New Deal

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been given a new, two year contract, tying him to the club until 2015 with the option of a one-year extension, according to the BBC. The new deal means the 32-year-old could play past his 35th birthday, having been with the Red Devils since 2006 after signing from Tottenham Hotspur. Carrick is currently nursing an Achilles injury he aggravated during the 1-0 win over Arsenal, causing him to miss each of England's two friendlies over the subsequent international break. However, he has done enough to impress manager David Moyes and earn the new contract, coming in for glowing praise from the former Everton boss. He is an exceptional man and a true professional," Moyes said. During Carrick's stay at Old Trafford, he has helped his side win five Premier League titles, one Champions League, one League Cup and one Fifa Club World Cup. All of those successes came under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired earlier this summer, but Carrick is looking ahead to further glory under Moyes's tenure. He said:
"The club has gone through a few changes and working under David Moyes has been fantastic. "I have won many trophies in my years playing here and I am looking forward to achieving more in the future."
Carrick was ruled out for six weeks with an Achilles tendon injury earlier this month, but still looks like being a crucial member of the United set-up for years to come. Moyes continued:
"I am delighted Michael has extended his contract. "During my short time at the club it hasn't been hard to notice that Michael is a great reader of the game and has excellent passing ability."
