Manchester United are expected to make an improved offer for Leighton Baines, according to the
Guardian. The Premier League champions have already had an offer for the left-back, believed to have been in the region of £10 million, rejected by Everton, who are now bracing themselves for a second swoop. It is understood there has been no further contact between the two clubs since the first offer was knocked back, and while United are readying an improved bid, it will still likely fall short of the Toffee's £20 million valuation of the 28-year-old. Roberto Martinez, who took charge of the Goodison Park club following David Moyes' move to Old Trafford, wants to extend Baines's contract rather than cash in on the defender, who only has two years left to run on his current deal. He has the backing of Everton chairman Bill Kenwright to resist any offer from the Merseyside club's former manager Moyes, who refused to be drawn on the Baines issue at his first official press conference as United manager last Friday. But the Scotsman could be in the market for a new left-back to replace veteran Patrice Evra, who is now 32 and has been linked with
a move back to Monaco.
