Man Utd Transfers: 10 Deals That Should Happen In January

10. Aymeric Laporte IN

Defensive solidity has underpinned much of Manchester United€™s success during the 21st century. However, with names like Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, Patrice Evra now out of the picture, Louis van Gaal must build a defensive cohort of similar ilk to guide the club back to the summit of English football. United have kept only four clean sheets in the Premier League to date this campaign and although the team has somewhat turned the tide defensively compared their early season form, the back four is clearly bereft of a world-class player. Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the Red Devils will have to reach deep into their pockets to land him. The Frenchman has a ‚30million release clause in his contract and given the integral role he played in helping Los Leones€™ qualify for their maiden Champions League campaign, the club will be desperate to tie him down to a new deal. Van Gaal has spent big since arriving in Manchester and although his side needs a top defender, it€™s hard to imagine United writing blank cheques to snap up Laporte this winter. Probability: 3.5/10
