Man Utd Transfers: 10 Players They Must Sign To Topple Man City
3. Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur)
Another Tottenham player who could be set to swap North London for Manchester is centre-half Toby Alderweireld, who was also cut from Pochettino's preferred XI this season amid lingering doubts over his long-term future.
In truth, Spurs don't really have much leverage here. The Belgian's contract expires in 2019, and while his club purportedly reserve the right to extend it by a further year, this also means adding a paltry release clause of £25m.
Meanwhile, United desperately need a central defender capable of staying fit for more than half a season, a criteria against which neither Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo nor (as of this year) Eric Bailly fare particularly well.
That leaves Chris Smalling and struggling new boy Victor Lindelof, which is hardly a pairing that inspires much confidence (other than in the opposing team's striker).
