There is something ugly about Manchester United's sparkly, expensive, Bastian Schweinsteiger shined 2015/16 Premier League winning machine. Louis van Gaal simply hasn't finished the job. He's spent around £75 million on a good valet, new alloys, fresh tyres and a paint job but he's left a big Wayne Rooney-shaped fluffy dice dangling from the interior mirror.

The England international was given assurance from the Red Devil's boss that he would be leading the line this season but given the amount of investment already put into the club this summer it seems unlikely they would risk starting their return to stardom on a striker who scored 12 league goals last season.

Yes, he played a handful of games in the middle of midfield but had his performances up front been of a high level then van Gaal wouldn't have been able to consider moving him. Since 2012 Rooney's natural goalscoring instinct has started to diminish and despite still being a stand-out talent it makes no sense for Manchester United to significantly improve all their other stuttering areas while neglecting the one that matters most.

If van Gaal's fluffy dice is not replaced with a garden-fresh streamline air freshener then his well-oiled automobile will struggle to get out of Chelsea's slipstream. I take a look at the potential Rooney replacements who are currently in the showroom...
