Man Utd Transfers - 5 Centre-Back Alternatives To Mats Hummels

5. Toby Alderweireld

12 months ago, Toby Alderweireld left Ajax to join Atletico Madrid with all the hopes that he could become a success in Spain. However, one year later and it simply hasn't worked out for the centre-back. Though Atletico enjoyed their most successful season in history in 2013-14, winning their first La Liga crown since 1996 and reaching the Champions League final, Alderweireld was forced to watch on from the bench. The Belgian international has failed to break into Atleti's starting XI with Diego Godin and Joao Miranda preferred by manager Diego Simeone, making only 12 league appearances last season. Having sat on the fringes for so long, Alderweireld may be looking for a way out of his Madrid hell this summer. And with Manchester United in desperate need of a centre-back, the two would make a logical pairing. Though he has struggled in Spain, Alderweireld has all the tools to succeed at United. He was a linchpin of Ajax's side that won three-straight Eredivisie titles between 2011-13 and is versatile in that he can also play right-back, an ability which would provide manager Louis van Gaal with an extra defensive option should Rafael get injured or suspended.
