Man Utd Transfers: 5 Flops Who Must Be Ditched In January

1. Danny Welbeck

Like Evra, there are probably one or two supporters up in arms about No.1 on our list of flops who have to go - Danny Welbeck. A product of the Manchester United youth academy, the England international showed signs of promise while on loan at Sunderland during the 2010/11 campaign, scoring six goals. He also showed early glimpses of his quality by netting nine times upon his return from his spell away from Old Trafford in the 2011-12 season. Since then though, the striker's shooting boots must have been misplaced because he's only scored three times in the Premier League since August 2012. My call for Welbeck to go is born out of not only his ineffectual performances in front of goal but out of there simply being better players in his position who deserve to be playing more regularly. I am of course referring to Javier Hernandez, who has unfairly been benched even while Welbeck's poor form has continued. This is galling given that Hernandez is statistically far more potent in front of goal than his colleague. Of Welbeck's 24 shots on goal last term, 10 were on target and 14 were squandered. The Mexican meanwhile had 24 shots on target and just 14 off target last season, and also netted 10 times in the league and 18 across all competitions compared to Welbeck's return of two strikes in all competitions. Yet somehow Welbeck is getting the nod over "Chicharito", and you have to wonder if he really is more deserving of his place in the starting XI, or if he should be jettisoned after such a prolonged period of ill-form. With Hernandez not getting in the side, he has hinted he may have to move on, and if it's a case of having one or the other, I'd pick Hernandez every time. Do you agree? Who should Unied get rid of in January? Let us know in the comment section, below.
