As speculation linking Arturo Vidal to United began to wane for the eighth or ninth time recently, Van Gaal was linked with a move for a former City player in the shape of AC Milan's Nigel De Jong, who he of course has worked with for Holland. The latest progress of the deal suggests that United are waiting for a green-light from Milan on a £10m bid, though it can surely only be a matter of time, given the financial issues the Italian giants are currently struggling with. It seems that De Jong has now leapt to the front of the cue of defensive midfield options for Van Gaal, which probably has a lot to do with his comparable affordability and the fact that he already knows the Premier League and wouldn't need time to bed in. And it's going to be a major surprise now if United don't get the deal done.
