Man Utd Transfers: Fergie's 10 Greatest Foreign Imports

6. Andrei Kanchelskis (Russia)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpjbjWCyr2c In 1990, the Berlin Wall was knocked down, ending the Cold War that had persisted between East and West since the 1940s. As a result, athletes from the former Soviet Union were able to seek employment in, amongst other places, the United Kingdom. In 1991, Sir Alex Ferguson took a £650,000 gamble on a Ukrainian-born Russian winger from Shakthar Donetsk, Andrei Kanchelskis, who arrived at the club a year before the inaugural Premier League season. The midfielder, 22 at the time, rapidly established himself as a first team squad member, playing 34 league games in his first season, before winning two successive Premier League titles with the club in the next two seasons. In his final season at the club, Kanchelskis was the team€™s top scorer as they finished an agonising second to Blackburn Rovers in the league, but fell out with Sir Alex, leading to his departure, a fate that also befell the man that replaced him on the right hand side of midfield, David Beckham. With 28 goals in 123 appearances, the speedy Russian was adept at scoring as well as providing goals, and though he eventually fell into obscurity following spells with Everton, Fiorentina and Rangers, his years at Manchester United were the finest of his career, and remain fondly remembered by the club€™s supporters.
