Edwin Van Der Sar was frequently cited as a United transfer target in the late nineties and early noughties, but didn't actually make his way to team until 2005, following a four year spell at Fulham. The Dutchman was integral to United's defence over the next six years, as they took four Premier League titles after winning just one of the previous four before his arrival, setting a record in 2009 when he went 1311 minutes without conceding a goal.

Aged thirty four when he joined the squad, Van Der Sar continuously put off his retirement by signing contract extensions, eventually hanging up his boots at the age of forty, with the twenty year old David De Gea signed to replace him.
