Manchester United's New Tartan Home Kit Disliked By Fans

The chequered pattern on United's new "Gingham" shirt has been designed with the history of the club in mind but the present fans say they will reject it.

Manchester United have unveiled a teaser image of the club's new tartan style home kit for the 2012/2013 season. The chequered pattern on United's new "Gingham" shirt has been designed with the history of the club in mind. Manchester United was formed in 1878 and the design is meant to represent its once thriving cotton industry and comes with the slogan; 'Forged in Industry, Made of Manchester.' The teaser image above was released on the club's official Facebook page earlier today, however leaked images of the design have been spreading all across the web since its unveiling. Here's a better image of what we think the shirt looks like in full below; Manchester United fans have vented their dislike of the new shirt across the web, some comparing it to a tablecloth and a tea towel and certainly not befitting of a side who could be defending their Premier League crown again next season should results go their way this weekend. There's dozens of examples of unhappy United supporters on the Facebook page angry about the design but here's a few selected comments below; David Wood;
€œBy far the worst shirt I€™ve ever seen in United€™s history! Please tell me this is a joke or a clown€™s costume rather than what the team will wear next year. €œWho wants to endure this humiliation every other week? This new madness is utterly out of touch with the fan base and entirely the result of Glazer€™s greed.€
Kai Peters is even concerned that the shirt will turn off potential transfer targets from joining the club;
"no signings in the summer - no one wants to play in this...."
Steve Jarvis;
€œPlease tell me the checked United shirt is a huge wind up? €œIt€™s hard enough as it is with the stick from other fans without having the worst, most ugly kit in the history of English football.€
A club spokesman responded to the negative press;
"It€™s historical, unusual and a bit different. Gingham was invented in Manchester going back to when it was known for its cotton mills."
