Newcastle Transfer News Round-Up: Every Player The Magpies Have Been Linked With From June 15th-21st

5. Troy Deeney (Watford)

Newcastle United will bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney this week as they up their summer recruitment drive, according to reports. The Daily Mail claim that the Magpies will put in a first bid for the forward within the next few days, although any initial offer is likely to be rebuffed. Newly-promoted Watford are not keen to sell a forward who netted 21 times in 42 Championship appearances last season and will hold out for a fee of more than £10 million for Deeney. It is unlikely that Newcastle would be willing to part with such a substantial portion of their summer transfer kitty in order to recruit Deeney - who was signed by the Hornets from Walsall for just £500,000 in 2010 - with £9 million Wolfsburg forward Bas Dost also being lined up by Steve McClaren. McClaren has twice bid for Deeney in the past while in charge of Derby County and would love to bring the forward to St James' Park. However, with Queens Park Rangers holding out for more than £15 million for England forward Charlie Austin, Newcastle's chief scout Graham Carr has been forced to find potential alternatives. West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino remains on the Magpies' radar but he would cost in excess of £20 million, while West Ham United's Diafra Sakho is also attracting interest from Newcastle. Deeney has scored 116 goals in 365 career appearances for Walsall, Halesowen Town and Watford to date - although 66 of those have come in his last three seasons for the Hornets.
