The Chelsea wing-back/attacker was linked with a move to Tyneside in the summer and the Newcastle hierarchy appear to have made him a prime target once again.

With Chelsea having supposedly been unwilling to let the Brazilian leave until they had replaced him, it now appears that Rafa Benitez has been given the green light by the Londoner's to loan their man following Ross Barkley's arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The left-sided 21-year-old could operate on the flank as well as at full-back and his versatility is sure to be key to the deal as the Magpies have lacked cover for the injured Paul Dummett since the start of the season.

Although some may question whether his mentality will fit in with Benitez's no-nonsense approach - the youngster was sent home from Chelsea's pre-season tour of China - he appears likely to be the first name through the door St James' Park this January.
