Newcastle United: Michael Atkinson' s Clever & Essential Minimalist Posters
Geordie fan and artist Michael Atkinson produces a series of minimalist Newcastle United posters. The crowd goes wild.
I always take great personal pleasure when someone I know, or someone attached to this site we call our own excels in their personal area of expertise - from TV appearances to published writing, it's like one of our baby birds has successfully flown the nest - so it gives me a sizeable thrill to use this space to point you in the direction of some work created by our very own Michael Atkinson. Alongside his duties writing sports games reviews for the WhatCulture gaming section, Michael is part of the strong contingent of Geordie writers which include myself and the two head honchos of the site who hold season tickets at St James Park, and he combines that black and white love with a passion for art to occasionally brilliant effect. His latest works - a series of minimalist Newcastle United themed posters based on some of the iconic players and moments from within the North East club's auspicious history - are arguably the crowning glory of his freelance art career. The series takes in as infamous a set of names as Scott Sellars, Jonas Gutierrez and the two Senegalese strikers currently filling two of the attacking slots in Newcastle's prolific, surprising team - Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse - but portrays each subject in an idiosyncratic and iconic manner. See for yourself...
