Newcastle United's attempts to add a defender to their ranks in the January transfer window appear to be failing as Watford have given Wigan permission to speak with their prized defender Adrian Mariappa. Wigan's offer, believed to be in the £2.5 million mark, was good enough for Watford to accept but Newcastle United have not had as much luck to date on a defender they have been tracking all window. Talking in his pre-Blackburn match news conference, United manager Alan Pardew did confirm that he made a final undisclosed bid for Mariappa but as far as we know they haven't accepted yet. If the Championship defender does sign for Wigan he would be the second signing Newcastle have missed out on after Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison (who the club admitted to making an offer for earlier in the month) joined West Ham. Elsewhere, things appear to be quiet for Newcastle United moving into the latter hours of the transfer window with no signings going out or coming in looking all that likely. The January transfer window shuts at 11pm and won't open again until the summer.
