Signed From: QPR (LOAN)

Though he allegedly signed for QPR on the promise of more money when Newcastle initially tried to sign him, Frenchman Loic Remy joined in August 2013 on loan and proved an instant success. Adding pace and an eye for goal to the team, he scored 14 goals in 26 appearances despite injuries limiting his time on the pitch.

Unfortunately, Newcastle were robbed of the chance to sign him permanently as he sought Champions League football and signed for Chelsea. He's since spent most of the time sitting on their bench.

3. Hatem Ben Arfa

Signed From: Marseille (LOAN Initially)

Though he has since gone on to be considered a scapegoat for the failings of Alan Pardew's time in charge at Newcastle, Hatem Ben Arfa was a revelation when he first signed (and after he returned from injury). Initially signed on loan from Marseille, the mercurial Frenchman had little to do in that first season as Nigel De Jong's rash challenge broke his leg against Man City.

It was in 2011/12 - and particularly the end of the season - that Ben Arfa really showed his ability. He proved himself a hugely skilful, unpredictable addition to Newcastle's attacking options and when deployed as part of a front three with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse, he was a huge part of why the Magpies came fifth.

Frustratingly, Pardew then decided to change his role in the team, demanding he defended more and ultimately robbing him of his true value to the team. That the manager somehow managed to convince fans that it was all Ben Arfa's fault remains a great source of ire.
