When Steve McClaren was appointed Newcastle boss in June, Lee Charnley told the club's official website that the ex-England manager was tasked with securing a top-eight Premier League finish and winning a cup this season. So will he? Chris' Prediction: Unlikely, although a top-eight finish is not out of the question Further signings still need to be made for Newcastle to target a top-eight finish plus a real assault on top cup competitions. They need defenders most urgently, and that will likely restrict them. However, the firepower of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Papiss Cisse, Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko and Siem de Jong may just see them sneak into the top eight with a bit of luck. Ross' Prediction: No Newcastle will fall short in the Premier League but they will get a decent enough cup run provided they garner a bit of luck. Matt's Prediction: No - not yet, anyway McClaren simply doesn€™t have the squad depth to challenge for a top-eight Premier League finish this season but he may succeed with a decent run in the League Cup.
