Newcastle's Plight In Numbers - What Exactly Would Relegation Mean?

1. 5 - Clubs From 30 Relegated To Bounce Back To The Premier League At The First Time Of Asking

Since the 2004-05 season, just five clubs from a possible 30 who have been relegated have bounced back into the top flight at the first time of asking. Norwich City could make that six from 33 if they beat Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final, but the omens are not great for Newcastle - even if they were one of the teams to achieve this feat back in 2009-10. The five teams to have come back at the first time of asking are Sunderland (relegated 2005-06, promoted 2006-07), Birmingham City (relegated 2005-06, promoted 2006-07), Newcastle United (relegated 2008-09, promoted 2009-10), West Bromwich Albion (relegated 2008-09, promoted 2009-10) and West Ham United (relegated 2010-11, promoted 2011-12). West Ham are the only side since 2010 (if Norwich don't achieve it) to come back straight away - so the likelihood is that Newcastle would be outside of the Premier League for more than just a solitary season this time around...
