Next England Manager: 10 Best Candidates To Replace Sam Allardyce
8. Steve Bruce
There’s still something weird about Steve Bruce’s departure from Hull City. The Geordie left the Tigers a few weeks after achieving Premier League promotion, and claimed that he was making the decision “for the sake of the club.” Mike Phelan has occupied the role in an interim capacity ever since, and Hull are yet to officially replace Bruce.
The former Manchester United defender’s name is always brought-up when the England job becomes available, but he’s always been employed at the time. This obviously isn’t an issue this time around, and with no Premier League jobs on the immediate horizon, Bruce is a natural contender for the position. He’s cheap, English, immediately available, and has achieved promotion with multiple clubs. That’s what he has going for him.
But Steve Bruce wouldn’t exactly be the most exciting appointment in the world, and he’s never really been able to raise a club’s fortunes beyond mid-table at the highest level. As uninspiring as Allardyce’s appointment was, Bruce’s would be met with widescale apathy, though he’s almost certain to be considered for the role.
