NFL: 5 Players Who Must Improve This Season

1. Ryan Mathews

Ryan Mathews Ryan Mathews has the distinction of being the only player on this list to have reached the Pro Bowl after a stellar 2011 season where he rushed for over 1000 yards. However, the San Diego Chargers have to have been expecting more when they traded up to the number 12 spot in the 2010 NFL Draft to select the Fresno State Bulldog. In his three seasons in the league, Matthews has yet to play in a full season, constantly getting injured along the way. Matthews has also put up some lousy stats besides his 2011 season, only scoring one touchdown last season before breaking his collarbone for the second time. He€™s lost at least two fumbles every season so far, raising suspicion to if he can truly be the man to lead the Charger€™s backfield. The clock€™s ticking, however, since the man who drafted Mathews, Norv Turner, has been let go from the organization, with new head coach Mike McCoy taking over. If Mathews can impress McCoy, he has a shot at sticking around. McCoy knows he has the talent to do so. If Matthews can€™t put up the numbers, though, he€™ll be gone before he knows it. It€™s a make-or-break season for the brittle running back. Which other players need to have a big season? Share your picks below.
