NFL Draft 2020: 13 Biggest Picks You NEED To Know
8. Offensive Tackle - Tristan Wirfs
Round 1: Pick 13
The offensive tackle is one of the most important positions in football. It doesn't matter how skilled your QB and RB are if they aren't getting adequate protection.
This year six OT's went in the first round. The one facing the most pressure and possibility for success is Iowa's Tristan Wirfs. Some mock drafts had the "Big 10 Offensive Lineman of the Year" going as high as #4 in their predictions. The San Francisco 49ers held pick #13, and with ties to multiple former Hawkeyes, were a dark horse candidate to land Wirfs (this was before they made the trade for Trent Williams). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to jump up one spot and draft him instead, giving their 14th and 117th picks in return. (Bonus trivia: this was the first trade of the draft)
While Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills Jr, and Mekhi Becton were all selected ahead of Wirfs, they are all joining teams in the middle of youth movements that aren't expected to compete right away. Ok, maybe Willis and the Cleveland Browns, but we've fallen for that trick before.
Tristan Wirfs has great size at 6'5" and 320 lbs to go with amazing athletic skills. At the combine he ran a 4.85 40-yard dash which is 2nd all-time for offensive linemen. He also holds the linemen combine record for vertical jump and currently sits tied for 1st in the broad jump. It helps that he come out of the University of Iowa's O-line factory that has produced such elite talent as Marshal Yanda, Bryan Bulaga, and Brandon Scherff.
Now he faces the opportunity to step in Week 1 to protect all-world QB Tom Brady in a high powered offense expected to be one of the NFC's most potent.
