NFL Week 1 Review - 8 Points & Plays Everyone Is Talking About
2. Jimmy G Finally Loses
There was an air of belief and unspoken arrogance in San Francisco. Jimmy Goroppolo, who signed last Halloween, spooked all other teams by being dropped behind centre in an unfamiliar set up and won 5 straight games.
The previously undefeated starter learned from one of the very best and has stayed patient to find his window of opportunity. The lowly 49ers were 0-9 when Jimmy joined, and finished with a record of 5-9. Natural talent like this deserved to be a starter and rightly so. Aaron Rodgers had to sit behind Brett Favre when he was drafted, learning from one of the very best and has in turn become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, it is expected that Jimmy could follow the same path and reach such heights if he is nurtured properly in San Francisco.
The team itself was poor, as if a fumble at the 1 yard line in the red zone wasn’t bad enough, three interceptions from Jimmy rounded off a very lacklustre performance by San Francisco. The 49ers may be architects of their own downfall by holding Jimmy G to such high expectations, laid on his shoulders by both the fans and the back office.
There is no doubt they can win, and if they rediscover the form from the end of last season could push for a winning record at the end of the season, but they need to make some adjustments quickly if they are going to.
