Sparta Rotterdam 1-0 Newcastle United (1979, Friendly) Way back in 1979 the Magpies headed over to Holland to face a Sparta Rotterdam squad containing none other than current Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal. Unfortunately for Newcastle, they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.

Manchester United 4-0 Newcastle United (1996, Charity Shield) Another unhappy August 11th, this time 19 years ago. The Magpies had been pipped to the title the season before by Man Utd, despite the Toon having enjoyed a healthy 12-point lead at one stage of the campaign. Goals from Eric Cantona, future Magpie Nicky Butt, David Beckham and Roy Keane saw Kevin Keegan's men routed at Wembley. Interestingly, future Newcastle defender Ronny Johnsen also pulled on a Red Devils jersey that day.

Newcastle United 0-1 Athletic Bilbao (2001, Rob Lee's Testimonial) With the Magpies midway through their ultimately unsuccessful Intertoto Cup campaign at the time, just 18,189 fans turned up for midfielder Rob Lee's testimonial with Athletic Bilbao. Julen Guerrero netted the visitors' winner, and Lee did not receive the applause and send-off he deserved after a distinguished Toon career.

Bolton Wanders 1-3 Newcastle United (2007, Premier League) The Reebok Stadium has not always been the happiest of hunting grounds for Newcastle United but in 2007 the Magpies left Lancashire with a magnificent 3-1 victory. Charlie N'Zogbia grabbed the first, before Obafemi Martins bagged a brace - including a magnificent overhead-kick. Nicolas Anelka scored a consolation for Bolton, while Marc Viduka, David Rozehnal, Alan Smith and Geremi all made their debuts forSam Allardyce's men.
