European club footballs biggest competition, the Champions League is back again this season and as usual 32 teams enter the group stages all vying for a place in the last-16. The coveted competition sees a host of familiar names with one major difference this season; no Manchester United. For the first time since 1996 the English giants failed to qualify for the group stages following a poor season in the Premier League. Their automatic place from the Premier League has been filled by the returning Liverpool who continue to grow under Brendan Rogders and qualify for the competition for the first time in five seasons. The men from Anfield join defending champions Real Madrid in group B as the Galacticos go in search of a record 11 European titles. The other English teams are; Arsenal who face Borussia Dortmund for the second time in three seasons, Chelsea who appear to have a straightforward group, and Manchester City who once again square up against Bayern Munich. As with every season there are a plethora of strong teams and world renowned players spread across the eight groups, all hoping to finish in the top two of the group in order to progress. This article will run through the groups and predict who will qualify for the last-16. With the first round of fixtures complete many teams have already laid down a marker for future games, but as we all know the Champions League is often full of surprises.
