8. Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham, £8.1 million)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n76jtxCsWs At first glance, it may not seem like Vertonghen should be on this list. But as the replacement to Ledley King following his long-overdue decision to retire, the Belgian has been the stand-out defender for Spurs. Playing at left-back while Benoit Assou-Ekotto is injured, as he does for Belgium despite being at heart a centre-back, his versatility is just one reason why he has been an integral part of the side, and his link-up play with Bale on the left flank has been fantastic. Plus he can score free kicks like the one above, which is handy. Only one clean sheet in the league isn't great, but they did concede a late goal in each game to deny him more, and none of them were his fault. 2 goals from 7 appearances in all competitions isn't bad either, considering he's a defender. His command at the back, despite only being at the club for a few short months, have also led some to speculate that he could be made captain by next season. Rating: 8/10 Great price, even better player.
