Premier League: 10 Summer Transfers That Simply Made No Sense

7. Bacary Sagna - Arsenal To Man City

When a club with the resources of Manchester City is battling on all fronts for numerous trophies, they will inevitably be using a big squad. So using their point of view, acquiring at least two top-class footballers for every position is not just sensible, but a necessity. Luring solid 31 year old right back Bacary Sagna from Arsenal on a free transfer to compete with Argentine Pablo Zabaleta was surely a wise decision. For the Frenchman, however, one might think that he will come to regret his choice when he realises just how lonely a bench can be. An undisputed starter at the Gunners, Sagna had turned in 284 appearances since his transfer from Auxerre in the summer of 2007. Quite what is he thinking in forfeiting a first-team berth at a Champions League regular - who recently ended their painstaking trophy drought - for a place on the Eastlands bench? He will not be a key component at Man City - instead, he will just be another number on the squad list, deputising for arguably the greatest right-back in the country when needed. He will not be needed or valued in any sort of capacity as he was at the Emirates, and while his bank account will thank him for the move, will his pride be echoing similar sentiments come May following nine months of sitting in a jacket on a cold and lonely bench?
