Premier League 2019/20: 8 Big Takeaways From Gameweek One
3. Man City And Liverpool Pick Up Where They Left Off
Last season was one of the most competitive campaigns in the history of the Premier League for Liverpool and Man City. Despite the Reds losing just one game all season, and tallying the third highest points total in the history of the competition, they were beaten to the title by City with just one point between them.
With Liverpool kicking the season off on Friday night and Man City playing next in the early Saturday kick off, all eyes were on the best two teams from last year. The two played each other in an extremely competitive Community Shield just a week prior, but how would they fare when the Premier League kicked off again?
Liverpool, who managed just one pre-season win, silenced any doubters with a convincing 4-1 victory over new boys Norwich. Goals from Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Divock Origi, and an own goal from Norwich’s Grant Hanley were marred only by an injury to star goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Man City saw Liverpool score four goals on Friday, and went one better on Saturday, keeping a clean sheet to boot. Though City were far from their best at the London Stadium, the champions managed a huge 5-0 win against West Ham to send a message to any challengers for their crown.
