Premier League: What We Learnt From The Opening Fixtures

Brilliant United

Moyes sends out message to Title rivals United on the other hand, laid down a firm marker to their title rivals with an impressive 4-1 win at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday evening. Robin Van Persie started where he left off last season and Danny Welbeck netted a brace of his own - bettering his goal tally from the 2012/13 season - handing Moyes the perfect start to life as manager. The Red Devils have yet to make a major signing of their own but sent out a message to those who doubt whether they will be able to defend their title successfully, and even want away striker Rooney chipped in with two assists as they put Michael Laudrup's Swans to the sword. Liverpool see off Stoke City: Can Rodgers guide them to 4th? Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool side also put in a very impressive display, though the scoreline against Stoke City might beg to differ. Daniel Sturridge fired home in the first half and that proved decisive, yet Liverpool wasted several chances and were thwarted by Asmir Begovic on several occasions. New signing Kolo Toure also struck the bar from a Steven Gerrard corner. However, the Potters - managed by Hughes for the first time - nearly rescued a point as the game neared its conclusion. Daniel Agger's blatant handball gifted Jon Walters the chance to level proceedings but he saw his effort saved by Simon Mignolet, who then parried away Kenwyne Jones' rebound. Hughes does not looked to have overhauled Stoke's style of play massively - and why would he given their success in the Premier League under Tony Pulis? Despite this though, they did cause Liverpool some problems at Anfield which bode well, particularly as Hughes sets about trying to improve his reputation following a disastrous spell in charge of Queens Park Rangers. On this evidence, Liverpool might well force themselves into contention for a Uefa Champions League place, though consistency and the retention of Suarez will likely be key to their chances.
