Premier League: What We Learnt From The Opening Fixtures

Cardiff's First Game In The Premier League Ends In Defeat

Mid table to come on this evidence? Saturday also marked the first game in the Premier League for Cardiff City who were promoted as champions of the Championship last season. Malky Mackay's side got a taste of what to expect as they fought hard, although they eventually went down 2-0 thanks to a terrific effort from Joe Cole and a second from Kevin Nolan. Cardiff have been busy recruiting this summer with several good additions including Steven Caulker from Tottenham, forward Andreas Cornelius and midfielder Gary Medel. In the process the Bluebirds smashed their transfer record not once, but twice as they look to sustain themselves in the top flight. It is difficult to judge after one game, but Cardiff will probably have to settle for a bottom half finish, though they have a good chance of surviving relegation. West Ham showed off their intent to progress to the next level and towards European football with the permanent signing of Andy Carroll and a bargain £6 million move for Liverpool outcast Stewart Downing. It was an impressive start to the new season for the Hammers as they look to better their 10th placed finish last campaign. On evidence of this showing, they may have a terrific chance of doing just that.
