Premier League: What We Learnt From The Opening Fixtures

West Brom And Southampton

Two Contenders For A Top Half Finish? At the Hawthorns, West Bromwich Albion went down 1-0 to Southampton as Rickie Lambert made it a very satisfactory week following his debut goal for England in mid-week. He lashed home a penalty in the last ten minutes after Luke Shaw had been felled, and progress will surely be the aim of the game for Mauricio Pochettino's men. The arrivals of Victor Wanyama from Celtic and defender Dejan Lovren who moved from Lyon could help the Saints take the next step following survival last season. Since then the has club smashed their transfer record to land Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo for £15 million. A clear signal of intent from chairman Nicola Cortese. Meanwhile, West Brom were the surprise package last season under Steve Clarke, and not much can be drawn from a narrow home defeat. The arrivals of Nicolas Anelka and on-loan Matej Vydra have strengthened the Baggies who will do well to match their feats from the 2012/13 season.
