8. CB - John Stones - Manchester City

John Stones has always shown glimpses of brilliance but nowhere near enough consistency to warrant his massive price tag.

Stones moved from Everton to Manchester City in 2016, after years of being linked with a move away from Merseyside. The deal earned Everton £47.5 million, making him the second most expensive defender in the world at that time - just behind David Luiz, funnily enough.

Since then Stones has made 67 appearances for City, just 10 fewer than he did in his entire time at Everton. Just as he was at Everton though, Stones is prone to making poor judgements and defensive errors that cost goals. Amazingly Stones has never scored a goal or made an assist in the Premier League. For the amount of money he cost, you'd expect at least a goal a season, not to mention more assuredness at the back.

It's quite telling that Stones has often been dropped in favour of playing the man he was signed to replace, Vincent Kompany. He's far from a mistake for Manchester City but, despite his relative young age, it might be time we accept that John Stones will never be the next Rio Ferdinand.
