Ranking Newcastle's Dutchmen From The Premier League Era
1) Daryl Janmaat
Newcastle recruited Janmaat barely a week after the end of the World Cup for about £5 million - and what a signing he has turned out to be. Seen as a replacement to the much-loved Mathieu Debuchy, the former Feyenoord man has been fantastic at right-back, with his attacking instincts and willingness to put in a tackle proving top drawer. Janmaat was actually one of Newcastle's better players going forward last season, providing good balls into the box while testing goalkeepers with some long-range efforts. His red card away at Leicester was a moment of stupidity but the intensity with which he played last season, even when results were going badly, was admirable. Defensively, he is still caught out from time to time by the pace of the league but, with a full season under his belt and more time to recuperate given his late return from Brazil last year, the 25 year-old can become a key player for the club going forward and they would do very well to keep him from going the way as Debuchy, given how highly full-backs who can attack are rated these days. If Newcastle can find someone to support him down the right-wing, it will also unquestionably help the full-back out - yet, despite having a revolving cast further up the line, Janmaat regularly produced performances of high quality last season. In the third-place play-off with Brazil last year, Janmaat came on as a late substitute and provided an assist to Georgino Wijnaldum, who scored Holland's final goal in a 3-0 win. If the two can establish a similar connection at Newcastle next season, fans have reason to be excited about what the Dutch dynamos can bring to the squad for the upcoming season.

University of Edinburgh graduate with a love of sport, in particular Newcastle United surprisingly enough. When I'm not shaking my head at Paul Dummett and Yoan Gouffran, I'm usually reading something or watching films of varying quality.
