Southampton Transfers: Jay Rodriguez Offered New 5 Year Deal To Stay
Club move to fend off interest in England striker.
According to Sky Sport's Amy Lewis's sources, Southampton have offered injured striker Jay Rodriguez a new 5 year deal to stay at the club. The news was broken on Lewis's Twitter account four days ago and has since gone wider on the social media sphere. Rodriguez, 24, has recently been rumoured to be lined up by Brendan Rogers to join Liverpool duo Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert - who both left Saints for the Kop a couple of months ago. Rogers has been given a massive transfer kitty to spend after Luiz Suarez's departure for Barcelona for around £75 million and Saints seemed to have responded to the threat of potentially losing a third player to Liverpool by offering the former Burnley player a new contract. Southampton are currently battling to keep Croatian defender Dejan Lovren at the club, after he expressed his clear desires to join Liverpool and it seems Saints realise it would be an embarrassment to lose four players all to Roger's team. The striker is currently out with an injury that will see him miss the beginning of the 2014/2015 Premier League campaign, after rupturing his anterior cruciate knee ligament towards the end of last season. Only days ago, the transfer rumour mill suggested that Rogers was lining up a £19 million offer for Rodriguez but Saints' counter-attack will more than likely keep the hit-man at the club as it aims to rebuild under new manager Ronald Koeman.
