Spurs Transfers: 10 Linked Players Tottenham Should Avoid

7. Rio Ferdinand (Free Agent, Formerly Manchester United)

Like Ashley Cole, there has never been any doubt about Rio Ferdinand's abilities. Unlike Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand is well, well past his best. The former England centre back is now 35 years old and his pace has all but disappeared. Spurs could do with some strengthening in his position, but there are better options available and they'd only be bringing in someone with the same issues as some of their current crop. Michael Dawson's overall quality and pace is constantly questioned as not good enough for Spurs, Younes Kaboul is injury prone like Ferdinand is and Vlad Chiriches could be on his way after a poor first season at White Hart Lane. Jan Vertonghen needs a top quality partner - someone in the mould of the Rio Ferdinand of 7 or 8 years ago - and Spurs should be looking beyond the likes of 35 year old free transfers for the job, regardless of how good they once were and the experience and winning mentality they might bring with them.
