Steve McClaren's Words Suggest Newcastle's Spending May Be Curtailed

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has offered a pessimistic assessment of the likelihood of the Magpies further adding to the squad this summer, admitting he "didn't know" if any supplementary signings would arrive before the end of the window. Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic have already been acquired by the Magpies this summer, while defender Chancel Mbemba's move to Tyneside should be completed this week pending an FA hearing over a work permit. And, with McClaren praising the club for "delivering" on the "promises" they made to strengthen at the end of last season, he used the dreaded phrase "I'm happy with the players we've got here" when asked about further signings.

When questioned by Sky Sports after Newcastle's 2-2 pre-season friendly draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane as to whether or not he expected any more signings this summer, McClaren responded:

"I don't know, I don't know. As I said before, we've got to be patient - they've got to be the right players. "I'm happy with the players we've got here, I'm happy with the additions."

Speaking about both Wijnaldum and Mitrovic, who have already signed, McClaren continued:

"Gini (Wijnaldum) getting a couple of games in the two games he's played, showing his quality - and that's what we've got in Mitrovic and Mbemba. "That's what the club promised at the end of last season and the club have delivered on three very good players."
