On first viewing, this might come across as a rather peculiar result to pick, after all, Sunderland lost the game. Yet there was much more to this game than the lack of points.

It was a fixture that saw one of the best atmospheres the Stadium of Light has witnessed in recent history. The reason why? Both of Sunderland’s closest regional rivals, Newcastle and Middlesbrough, were relegated as Sunderland stayed up by the skin of their teeth.

The game itself was also rather exciting. The Premier League top scorer, Nicolas Anelka, put Chelsea ahead with a stunning long range strike, only for it to be cancelled out following a rare Petr Cech error, as Kieran Richardson pounced.

Chelsea showed their class to stick another couple of goals past SAFC, but a late Kenwyne Jones header ensured the fans were singing at the final whistle.

Then the stadium erupted as news filtered through regarding Newcastle and Middlesbrough’s fate. What a day!
