Virgil van Dijk is Liverpool's record signing by quite some distance and at teh time of his transfer the most expensive defender in world football. But so far, he's been worth every penny.

Long courted by the Reds, van Dijk finally made the move from Southampton to Anfield in January 2018, in a deal that many though to be ludicrous. He was great no doubt but surely it was too much money for a centre-back. Wrong.

Prior to his arrival, Klopp's team were wonderful in attack but woeful in defence. Big, strong, technically gifted and with fantastic vision and awareness, van Dijk drastically improved the back-line and has become the one player that the Reds simply can't live without.

After scoring a late winner on his debut, against local rivals Everton no-less, the Dutchman has gone from strength-to-strength, finishing runner-up in the UCL in 2018 before going one better the following year, as well as lifting the UEFA Supercup and Club World Cup. He was named PFA Player of the Year in 2019 and finished second in the Ballon d'Or, incredible feats for a defender.

He's more than played his part in Liverpool's league dominance this season and he is without a shadow of a doubt the best centre-half in world right now.
