The Most Expensive Liverpool XI Of All Time

From the best defender in the world to the defender who thinks he's the best, Dejan Lovren in some ways was the original van Dijk, becoming the most expensive Reds defender when he switched from Southampton to Liverpool in 2014.

That's where the similarities end I'm afraid. While the Croatian international is hardly terrible, he has the tendency to make a lot of individual errors and a lack of form has seen the once first choice centre-back, drop behind van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the pecking order.

Still a useful squad player, Lovren will always be remembered for his audacious claim to fame in 2018:

I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with my national team, we are in the [World Cup] final. I think people should recognise that I’m also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense."

With seven goals conceded in those two finals, it's safe to say Lovren got a little ahead of himself.
